SEMNARC Communication Strategy

SEMNARC utilizes a variety of modes to ensure effective communication remains uninterrupted during times of civic duty and community service. These modes operate as distinct, independent layers within our communications pool.

Our Foundation in Amateur Radio

Our organization began with Amateur Radio as its primary mode. Following the legacy of the late Gary Peterson (N0ZOD), Ham radio remains our main mode of operation today.

Parallel Layers: GMRS and Zello

To broaden our reach and ensure all volunteers could participate, SEMNARC was the first group in Southeast Minnesota to establish and organize a separate GMRS layer. This integration proved its worth in the Winter of 2021, when our GMRS repeater system (WRDZ716) provided critical service during the December 15th Derecho.

Additionally, we rolled out Zello as a standalone digital layer. While distinct from our radio frequencies, it remains a critical component of our strategy, serving as:

  • The Primary Layer for members without Amateur or GMRS licenses.
  • A Vital Backup for our radio-active members.*
  • An Essential Link for coordination with the EOC and other officials.

Today, Amateur Radio, GMRS, and Zello function as three separate, priority communication layers for SEMNARC and our Fillmore County Skywarn operations.

*No, not that kind of radio active—though we might wonder about one member; it would explain a lot.
